this thing is real, is real: in process with Annalee Traylor (2025)

Annalee Traylor’s this thing is real refuses to impose order on movement, focusing instead on creating the conditions for it to emerge. This philosophy drew me to the two-week rehearsal process she and her cast embarked on this past summer at Atlanta’s Goat Farm Arts Center.

The emergent nature of Traylor’s choreography is why I chose to document process over performance, capturing order arising through impulse rather than control. This photo essay observes how improvisation, repetition, and collective attention give rise to structure, emotion, and meaning, exploring what it looks like to treat volatility as a feature and not a bug.
